Domestic Violence Awareness Month – October 2024

Sponsored by the Gun Sense: For the Common Good
Part of the SMOS Living Justice Ministries

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an opportunity to remember victims and survivors, raise awareness of what domestic violence is, how to recognize it, and what can be done to prevent it.

The ripple effects of guns in the hands of an abuser extend far beyond the intimate relationship. This affects children, family members, coworkers, and the law enforcement officers who respond to acts of domestic violence.

Ways to Help:

  1. Educate Yourself and Others
  2. Listen Without Judgment
  3. Encourage Professional Support
  4. Raise Awareness and Advocate for Change

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month Saint Martha’s, a ministry of Catholic Charities, strives to create a space of awareness, solidarity, and support for all those impacted by domestic violence. Victims and survivors need support all year, but we use the month of October to intentionally bring awareness to the issue that impacts so many.  You can show your support in a variety of ways:

  • Purple Leash Project 5K & Fun Run Saturday, October 12th2:30 pm – 07:30 pm
Advanced registration for the Purple Leash 5K and Fun Run is required. Onsite registration will not be available. The cost of entry is $40 from September 21 to October 4, and $45 from October 5-11 – https://runsignup.com/purpleleash.
  • Purple Thursday – Thursday, October 17
Purple is a symbol of bravery, courage, survival, and peace. Therefore, it is a fitting color to represent those impacted by domestic violence. Dress in purple from head to toe to show your support for survivors and your commitment to ending violence. Light your place of business up purple. Add a purple lightbulb to your porch light. Snap a picture and upload it to social media. Use the hashtags: #purplethursday & #dvam & #painttheloupurple24
  • Shop at Beauty Brands!
Beauty Brands will be hosting a campaign to raise awareness and funding for End Abuse, a program that supports local domestic violence shelters. From September 23rd to October 27th, 2024, Beauty Brands will donate 100 percent of the donations from every 4 oz Redken Max Hold hairspray to Saint Martha’s.  There are locations in Brentwood, St. Charles, and Wentzville.
  • Follow/Like/Share Saint Martha’s social media posts all month.

Keep Saint Martha’s staff and those we serve in your prayers. Please share their website and information with anyone who might need help.
