Black History Month @ SMOS

As we may know February is an important month for a number of reasons, but one of the most notable reasons is Black History Month. Black History Week was established on Feb. 7, 1926, by Carter G. Woodson, who initiated the first celebration. It wasn’t until 50 years later when President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month during the country’s 1976 bicentennial.  Ford called upon Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history”.  Black History Month was created to focus attention on the contributions of African Americans to the United States and throughout history.

Please join us tomorrow morning for our next I&D Committee meeting – at 8:00am in the School Teachers’ Lounge. We’ll be planning our Black History Month celebrations, and looking at other details for the rest of the school year. All are welcome to join!  Have your coffee with us after drop-off.
