Help Needed For Kindergarten Igloo
I was lucky enough to be hanging out in Mrs. Harvatin’s Kindergarten classroom as some large structure was being constructed in her classroom. Jugs and Glue Guns everywhere! As I was ooohing and ahhing, a young high-school alum came in with a huge grin, “Yes! I remember this when I was in your class, Mrs. Harvatin!” What a precious moment that was that I got to witness between our veteran teacher and one of her long ago kindergarten students. And so it continues … The Harvatin Igloo!
Every year, SMOS Kindergarten teacher Rita Harvatin teaches her class about winter activities! Penguins and snowflakes and snowmen and even Adjectives!! Are you aware that Descriptive Writing flows best while sitting inside a cozy igloo?! It was quite a team effort as each milk jug was held into place for it’s part in the overall ambiance of Antarctica. What a “cool” hangout space for reading, relaxing, quiet time, and learning for these, the youngest of the Dragons. Mrs. Harvatin and her igloo continues to teach generations of curious kindergarteners about more than just science – they learn to work together, build structures, and life-long friendships.
Now, here’s where you can help – Mrs. Harvatin reuses the same gallon plastic jugs to build the igloo each year, and many of them have seen plenty of wear and tear. She would like to replace them with new ones. So, please collect your jugs (wash them out) and deliver them to the school office. Any 1-gallon plastic kind is great – milk, juice, water, etc. And thank you in advance for helping out with this endeavor and keeping it going for many years to come.

Throughout the school year, we will be highlighting the amazing and wonderful things that are happening in our classrooms and grade levels at St. Margaret of Scotland School. We are very proud of the work our teachers do with our students and are amazed by what happens at SMOS. Our goal is to share more about the hidden gem that is St. Margaret’s.
