Weekly News From St. Margaret of Scotland School

by Patrick Holley, Principal

~ As we enter into the month of April, we continue honoring our Saints of the month. April’s saint is St. Catherine of Siena. St. Catherine of Siena was born the 25th child of her mother during an outbreak of the plague. As a result, half of her brothers and sisters did not survive childhood.

Catherine began having mystical experiences at the age of 21, which changed her life trajectory. She entered public life and worked to help the poor and sick. Her ministry attracted followers who helped her in this mission. She entered politics by petitioning for peace during the Avignon papacy and brokered peace deals between warring Italian city-states. She is credited with writing over 400 letters, a Dialogue, and several prayers! These influential works led to St. Catherine being declared a doctor of the Church in 1970.

As a woman with public influence in the 1300s, Catherine was often met with slander and opposition. However, she spoke and wrote with truth, authority, and fearlessness. Let us follow her example in doing and saying what is right, even when it can be difficult.

Throughout the school year, we present an article in the bulletin each week providing updates from St. Margaret’s School, written by a member of our school staff.
