What started as a post–Easter break jump scare at the window has turned into front-row seats for a fourth-grade nature documentary—complete with nervous dads, patient moms, and two very new (and very hungry) baby birds.

Egg-citing Developments In 4th Grade

A little birdie told us… No, wait, it was Ms. U(nverferth) reporting live from her windowsill:

The Tuesday we got back from Easter break, I sat down at my desk and was startled by a bird flying away right by my desk window. When I looked over, I noticed a nest with two eggs. After a bit of sleuthing, we realized it was a mourning dove and that the eggs would hatch in about two weeks (depending on when they were laid). For the next week and a half, we watched as the male (Larry) and female (Laura) switched places throughout the day, sometimes catching quick glimpses of their eggs, and watching as they got used to the random faces in the window. When we left school last Friday, we were thinking that we may come back to baby birds on Monday, and, sure enough, one of the eggs had hatched by Monday morning! We were all a little worried that the other egg might not hatch but by the end of the day, there were two chicks! Laura and Larry are great parents and continue to sit on the baby birds as well as feed them (which is…interesting).

The students have enjoyed the rare opportunity to see a bird super close-up (the nest is a foot away from where Ms. U sits at her desk) and have been excited to see the baby birds. Laura seems fine with us getting a close look in the morning when we arrive, but Larry seems a bit “chicken” and likes that we keep the blinds down a bit to make him feel safe. It’s been fun learning some bird facts as well as waiting patiently for the eggs to hatch and to catch a glimpse of the babies now that they’ve hatched.
