Care For Creation Action Items – June 2026

June 6-7

The United Nations World Environment Day is on June 5, and on that day, we recall the insights of Pope Francis that “there has been a growing conviction that our planet is a homeland and that humanity is one people living in a common home.” Noting the interconnectedness of all members of the Earth community, he further says, “Interdependence obliges us to think of one world with a common plan… What is needed, in effect, is an agreement on systems of governance for the whole range of so-called ‘global commons’.” (Pope Francis, ‘Laudato Si’)

Action: As a follow-up and continuation of the UN World Environment Day on June 5, take online or in-person action to let local, state, and national leaders know that you want protections in place for our precious Earth and all beings.

June 13-14

“If you’ve never experienced the mystery of a resurrection, buy a package of seeds – cucumbers, pole beans, lettuce, what have you – and plant them in some fertile soil. As you push them into a dark tomb of silent earth, be assured that within weeks those seeds will break forth, throwing aside pebbles and weeds in order to grow… In New Seeds of Contemplation, Thomas Merton reflects on the book of Genesis, stating that God made and delights in ‘the world as a garden.’ … Tending to and caring for one another and our fragile world as gardeners do? This is the glory of God.” (Pierre Eau Claire, NCR)

Action: “The food system is responsible for over a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions, of which approximately 80% are associated with livestock production. But swapping out those meat and dairy items for plant-based options can have an enormous impact on climate change and your personal carbon footprint.” (EARTHDAY.ORG)  Also, support a farmers’ market or other small, local farmers.

June 20-21

As we celebrate the Summer Solstice today, we give gratitude to Jesus, “the Light of the world,” for the gift of our sun, which sustains and nourishes our Mother Earth. “Life is dependent on the roaring energy of the Sun – light becomes nourishment for the entire Earth community.” (Journey of the Universe) Let us rejoice in both the Son and the Sun for billions of years of both light and life!

Action: Show gratitude for the bounty of the sun by (if possible) installing some solar panels or encouraging local, state, and national governments to do so.

June 27-28

“Every day we have opportunities to reconnect with God through an encounter with nature, whether an ordinary sunrise, a starling on a power line, a tree in a park, or a cloud in the sky. This spirituality doesn’t depend on education or belief. It almost entirely depends on our capacity for simple presence.” (Richard Rohr

Action: Consciously give thanks for one revelation of the divine that you experience today in the natural world.
